The WasteMaker is a machine, a cataloging system for unquantifiable temporal events that occur within human-machine interactions.

The machine is activated by pushing the button. The machine generates a unique pattern on the screen by analyzing, learning and mimic the patterns in the existing repository. The participant recreates the pattern on the provided stencil. The recreated pattern by the human is then added to the pattern repository which is used by the machine. The machine learning algorithm at initiation was seeded with 5000 randomly generated patterns.

The act of deciphering a pattern and inscribing it onto the paper, the human gesture, as mechanical as it seems to be, still... is never devoid of L’affect (Spinoza’s affectus), a sensation felt and thus pertaining to the constant of the process of semiosis... the human condition. Each inscription, the very least, indicates the state of being in that transient moment.

The machine generates patterns based on learning from the seeded pseudo-random, algorithmically generated patterns. The generated patterns, the algorithmic process of computation and representation on a screen indicates, the very least, the state of being - of the machine.

The machine aims at capturing the semiotic conflict of the interaction between the above processes of semiosis. As the machine learns from the patterns created by humans and human creates pattern created by the machine, it creates a feedback loop where the semiosis processes of the human and machine overlap. The Button exists in this zone of interaction, independent, an autonomous zone, keeping the processes distinct and intertwined.
